Can Breast Reduction Improve My Athletic Performance?

4 Minute Read:

In today’s day and age, many women desire larger breasts, and so they naturally turn to breast augmentation surgery to help them achieve their desired breast aesthetic

The statistics don’t lie: breast augmentation was one of the top five most performed cosmetic surgical procedures in 2020. And that makes sense, since everywhere you turn, you see celebrities and advertisements with models who have large, voluminous breasts

However, the truth is that bigger, fuller breasts are not right for every woman, nor are they what every woman wants.

For many female athletes, smaller, more manageable breasts are desired, especially if their breasts are large naturally. For these women, it is not breast augmentation but rather breast reduction that can best help them achieve the physique they are after.

Below, you’ll find some information on breast reduction surgery to help you understand what the benefits of this procedure are for active women.

What Is Breast Reduction Surgery?

Breast reduction surgery is exactly what it sounds like: it is a plastic surgery procedure in which the breasts are reduced in size and volume

For this procedure, Dr. Pincus will make one of two different types of incisions in your breasts. The lollipop incision requires an incision to be made around the areola, along with an additional incision that runs vertically down the center, lower pole of the breast, while the anchor incision starts as a lollipop incision but then requires an additional incision to be made along the inframammary fold (the lower crease of the breast).

From here, Dr. Pincus will remove and/or redistribute some of the tissue and fat in your breasts to give you smaller, less burdensome breasts, along with a more aesthetically pleasing breast appearance

How Will Breast Reduction Help Me?

Women (both athletes and non-athletes) choose to undergo breast reduction surgery for different reasons. Some of these reasons include pain management and being able to engage in the fun activities and sports that they love.

Pain Management

Many women with overly large natural breasts suffer from chronic neck, shoulder, and back pain from the weight of their breasts. In addition to this, women with large breasts tend to suffer from skin irritations, such as rash, in the areas where the breasts rub against each other or the surrounding skin.

These discomforts are especially true for female athletes, who are constantly active. As they move around, their breasts are constantly moving and rubbing against each other. Though this pain and discomfort affects women to varying degrees, the reality is that any pain is too much pain.

By reducing the size of the breasts, you will have less weight to carry around, which means alleviating your body of much of this pain and irritation.

Improved Athletic Performance

Women with overly large breasts have a much tougher time engaging in fun activities, such as sports (whether competitive or recreational). The breasts can easily get in the way and slow them down.

Whether you are a runner, volleyball player, softball player, basketball player, or you participate in any number of other sports, there’s no reason to allow your large breasts to slow you down and keep you from playing your best.

Besides the physical improvement to your body (making you lighter, sleeker, and more agile), you will also notice improved psychological effects of breast reduction surgery. You will find yourself with more comfort and confidence while playing, which means that you will be more successful in your particular sport.

And the improvement to your body and lifestyle does not stop with playing sports. Dancing and other high-energy activities will become fun again, and you’ll be able to enjoy more of what life has to offer you!

Are There Any Other Procedures That Can Help Me?

While breast reduction surgery is extremely effective in allowing women with large breasts to look and feel more comfortable with their bodies, along with increasing physical performance in sports and other activities, this procedure will not elevate sagging breasts

To correct this issue, breast lift surgery (mastopexy) is needed. Most women combine their breast reduction and breast lift to give them a more complete transformation: smaller, more manageable breasts that sit at a perkier, more youthful height.

Additionally, for women (both athlete and non-athlete) who have undergone a previous breast augmentation surgery and no longer desire the increased size that the breast implants provide them, Dr. Pincus offers breast implant removal surgery. For this procedure, Dr. Pincus will remove your breast implants to return you to a smaller, natural breast size.
