As you age, your skin ages with you. Your skin can begin to sag, jowls can appear, and wrinkles can grow. When these occur, you may begin finding an interest in a facelift, which can provide you with a refreshed appearance. But with this procedure comes many things to consider.

Recovery is one of the biggest concerns when it comes to any cosmetic surgery. You may be curious about the recovery timeline and what to expect. This blog covers the average recovery timeline that you may experience.

Week-By-Week Facelift Recovery Timeline

A facelift is a highly customized procedure, working within a patient’s unique anatomy and needs. Board-certified plastic surgeon Dr. David Pincus will tailor your facelift to your aesthetic goals, meticulously crafting your surgical plan while considering your needs during the recovery process.

While each facelift healing process is different, most patients generally follow a similar timeline:

First 48 Hours

Facelift surgery is an outpatient procedure, so you can return home the same day. You will need to arrange a ride home and someone to help care for you for the first 48 hours.

Proper rest and care are crucial in these first couple of days. It’s also vital to keep your head elevated to reduce swelling and avoid strenuous exercise. However, gentle movement is also encouraged to promote blood flow.

Prescription pain medication should be taken when advised to help with discomfort during initial healing.

First Week

Your sutures may be removed as early as the first week. It’s important to follow post-operative instructions to ensure your incision sites heal properly.

Bruising and swelling will peak during the first few days but should slowly go down by the end of the week. Discomfort may persist, so take pain medication as needed.

You may be advised to begin light walking once you feel well enough to move to help circulation and avoid blood clots. Anything more than light walking should be avoided for the first week.

Week 2

Residual swelling and bruising will still be present after two weeks, though it should be a visible improvement from the first week. Aside from bruising and swelling, discomfort should be a lot more manageable. You should begin feeling more like yourself again.

Many patients return to work and light exercise by the end of their second week, provided it is not strenuous, and they have received their surgeon’s clearance.

Weeks 3 to 4

These weeks are when patients begin to see initial improvements from their procedure. While swelling and bruising may persist, the new contours of your face should begin to show.

Work and regular activities can be resumed at this time, though you should always be cautious of putting too much strain on your face to avoid complications.

Months 2 to 3

You should see your final results around this time. Outwardly, most signs of the procedure have healed. Internally, your deeper tissues may still be healing and settling.

While you may feel like you’re fully healed, it’s important to attend all of your planned postoperative appointments to avoid any complications from occurring.

Month 3 and Beyond

It can take up to a year for your body to fully heal from facelift surgery. If you notice any potential complications, contact your surgeon immediately.

Taking proper care of your face after your procedure will help prolong your natural-looking results for many years.
